It's another busy week in Language Arts class!
On Monday, students will take the SRI (Scholastic Reading Inventory) test. Students enrolled in Read 180 took this assessment earlier in the month. We are continuing to read the Lightning Thief in class. There will be at least 1 chapter assigned for homework on Tuesday. I will be emailing students an e-text, although students can check out a hard copy from the library, if they prefer. We will also continue working on our personal narratives. Students have selected their challenging moment and have started using different elaboration techniques to draft the narrative. This week we will begin incorporating dialogue and work hooks for interesting beginnings. Readers' Workshop will also begin this week. Students who already have a book they are reading at home must bring the book in on Wednesday. I look forwarding to meeting families at Open House on Tuesday!

The first major writing assignment will be a personal narrative. Write an autobiographical narrative based on a challenge or choice in the student’s life that follows a logical sequence. Use narrative techniques such as dialogue, pacing, and descriptive details. Include a conclusion that reflects on the significance of the experience. This week, we are continuing to brainstorm and pre-write. The Soundtrack to My Life homework assignment is designed to help students record their memories, hopefully discovering memories they didn't think of for their Life Map. This homework assignment is due Wednesday, Sept 14. Directions and a Sample are below. As a reminder, the marking period ends on Friday, November 6th!
We have spent the majority of October finishing up our CORE novel Wringer and working on several in-class projects. PowerSchools will more accurately reflect October's assignments this week. Reading Logs: These are assigned for each week. Students should have completed 12 entries at this point (4 a week, due on Oct. 8, Oct. 15, and Oct. 22). In addition to including the date, title of book and pages read, students should turn in 1 paragraph summarizing what they read, and 1 paragraph describing their reaction or thoughts about the reading. Advice Column: Students identified Palmer's conflicts in the novel Wringer and wrote him advice from the point of view of another character. Three paragraphs in total should be typed into Google Docs and shared with Ms. Apgar no later than OCT. 28! Typing time was provided in class. Personal Narrative: We will be wrapping up the drafting process by Oct. 30th. Students will begin revising on Nov. 2nd. Final copies will need to be typed into Google Docs and shared with Ms, Apgar no later than Nov. 10! After spending the past several weeks brainstorming potential writing topics, today students began drafting their Personal Narratives, which is one of three major projects/significant tasks we will complete this quarter. Their assignment is to do the following:
Write an autobiographical narrative based on a challenge or choice in the student’s life that follows a logical sequence. Use narrative techniques such as dialogue, pacing, and descriptive details. Include a conclusion that reflects on the significance of the experience. The majority of the work for this will be done in class, including drafting, revising, editing and publishing, although some work may be sent home for completion. Our first Significant Task will be to write a personal narrative on a challenge or choice that each student faced.
In order to help students select an appropriate topic for their narrative, we will be creating Life Maps. A Life Map is a visual representation of the events and experiences that have shaped us as individuals. In class today, we started brainstorming these important events, determining when they occurred in our lives and planning images to represent each event. If students did not finish this planning sheet, they have taken it home for homework. Once the planning sheet is complete, we will begin to create our Life Maps in class. Students will have some time on Thursday and Friday in class, to put their events (labeled with the name of the event and the date it occurred) in chronological order with an image to represent the event. This assignment will be considered a Writing Project grade. |
