We have reached the mid-point of quarter 2. Students will be coming home today with their progress reports. These need to be signed and returned to Ms. Apgar by Friday. If you have questions regarding a grade, please check power school first, then follow up with the individual teacher. Additionally, in Reading/Writing. Students received an A-Z Book Report Project. They should be reading their current independent book nightly. The project will serve as their homework over the next few weeks. The project will be due on January 3. Students recieved feedback on their vignettes (although some students have not turned in a draft--see powerschool: if there is a 0, it means I did not recieve a draft).
Homework tonight: Return to the draft vignette. Highlight or underline the examples of figurative language they used in their writing. If there are not 3 examples, they should add figurative language to their writing. Students will be writing their own personal vignettes. The assignment will have them select an element of life to explore using a variety of figurative language. Much of the project will be done in class. For TONIGHT"S HOMEWORK: Students need to write a 1 page draft vignette. They should pick from 1 of the options and draft their vignette. A draft does not need to be perfect. Spelling errors, etc are fine at this stage. I am only looking at the ideas they have.
Students should have an independent reading book they read at home. For some students this is a book they are starting. For others, this is a book that they may be in the middle of reading. BY MONDAY, Nov. 26, they will need to read their book 3 times (for 20-30 minutes each time), and complete a double entry journal. Double entry journals are a way for them to react and respond to the text. This is something we've done in class.
Due on 11/16:
For Reading/Writing homework tonight: Students are reading 1 vignette from House on Mango Street "Chanclas" and they have 1 open ended question. They should have a packet. They went through the first page of questions in class, the last page is homework. If they have lost this assignment/ forgotten write it down: -they can access the text here: http://www.sdshs.net/ourpages/auto/2015/10/15/48627869/HouseOnMangoSt_PDF.pdf -The question is: How old do you think Esperanza is in the vignettes A Rice Sandwich and Chanclas? What evidence supports this estimate? They can answer this on lined paper. Reminder:
Conferences are Wednesday, Nov. 14 Teachers will be in their rooms from 2-3:30 and 5-6:30 to meet with families on a first come, first serve basis. This afternoon 7th graders will recieve their progress reports. This report represents their current average as of the middle of the marking period. Students must return the progress report with a parent/guardian signature by FRIDAY (Oct. 5) to Ms. Apgar. (The signed progress report will count as a homework grade).
If you have questions regarding a particular grade or subject, please look at PowerSchool first. This will give you an idea of current performance on individual assignments. If you still have questions, please reach out to the individual teacher. Students should be bringing home their independent reading books each night and engaging in 20 minutes of reading. To compliment the work we've done in class as part of our short story unit, students will create a Character Portrait or Character Collage to describe the character traits of this person. They can choose to use the outline of a person provided, or use blank paper for a collage. The project can use words, phrases, text evidence, and/or pictures. Creativity is encouraged! Once the portrait/collage is complete they should write a paragraph or two that links evidence from the book to the elements of their collage. They don't need to finish the book in order to complete the project, though they should reach at least the middle of their independent text. They each have a direction sheet. This project is due on Wed., Sept. 26. Their homework for the next week is to continue independent reading and to work on the project. They are not required to do any additional responses, although they are encouraged to take notes to key quotes to help them with their explanation.
Greetings and Welcome to the 2018-2019 School Year!
I've learned over the years that with our middle schoolers, school notices don't always make into backpacks, let alone out of them into your hands. To help keep the lines of communication open, I will send emails regarding 7th grade events, Reading/Writing Projects, etc. I will also post information to my webpage which can be found here. Information specific to reading and writing will be under the Language Arts News Tab, general school information or team specific news will be posted under 7th grade team information. Several of you asked about communication regarding missing work. I strongly believe 7th grade is a year to build organization and self-advocation skills in our students. When Language Arts (reading/writing) projects or other assignments are missing, I will typically have a conversation with the student first. If the assignment is not turned in following that conversation or if I notice a pattern of late and missing work, I will reach out to you. I also encourage you to use PowerSchool as a resource. Students were given a copy of their login information yesterday, but if you need another copy, we will have it available at Open House. Should you have any questions or concerns, now or at any time during the school year, please feel free to reach out! Email is often the quickest way to reach me. Finally, a few reminders:
We look forward to seeing you at Open House! I hope you have a wonderful weekend! *Ms. Apgar |
