Hello!
We have reached the final week of marking period 1! Grades technically close this Friday (Oct. 27) and teachers have a week or so to finalize grades. If you haven't been checking PowerSchools, now might be a good time! Report card conferences are scheduled for November 15. More information will follow. In Language Arts, we're wrapping up a number of projects and assignments. Today students had their 2nd class period to work on their Postcards to Camp Half-Blood project. They are responsibile for writing as if they are Grover and Annabeth and reporting the events of the quest back to Chiron. The writing should include details from Grover and Annabeth's perspectives, focusing on how these two characters have experienced the main events of the story. If students did not finish their postcards in class, it is homework tonight. I will collect the postcards tomorrow in class. We will spend Wednesday-Friday finalizing and publishing our Personal Narratives. First drafts should have been submitted through Google Classroom last Friday (Oct. 20). This week we will do peer and teacher conferencing with our writing to revise and edit. We will publish our narratives this Friday (Oct. 27). Our final test on Lightning Thief will be on Monday, Oct. 30. It will count for quarter 1's final grades. It will be open book and consist of multiple choice and open ended questions similar to the Smarter Balance format. I am in the process of grading many other smaller assignments--open-ended response questions and other literary analysis tasks. Last Friday, students had time to fix up assignments, and by now their I Am Poems and Which Greek God/Goddess would you want to be related to? response must be submitted through Google Classroom. Please let me know if you have any questions! *Ms. Apgar

REMINDER: Marking Period 1 closes on Friday, October 27. At this point, all work is due, and teachers will have a week to catch up on grades. Report Card Conferences will be held later in November
This week students will spend class time working mostly on projects. Monday and Wednesday will be spent drafting their personal narrative. Tuesday they will start their Lightning Thief Post Card Project. For this, they will work with a partner to retell events from Percy's quest from the perspective of Grover and Annabeth. They will have class time to work on this. The final postcards will need to be turned in by Wednesday, October, 25. Students should have read through chapter 17 and 18 by this point. On Thursday, we will read chapter 19 in class, as we move towards completing the novel and taking our end-of-book test next week. We are moving towards more independence with the Lightning Thief. At this point, the majority of the reading will now be done at home, and students will have Tuesdays and Thursday for discussion and project work-time.
Wednesday and Friday are focused on continuing to work on our personal narratives. Students are selecting their topics and learning the art of elaboration. We'll work on zooming in and slowing down important moments in our life. We are celebrating Space Week this week! Students get to work with grade 3 students to create Lunar Launchers! On Friday, grade 7 students will get to watch Hidden Figures.
In Language Arts, we are continuing to read Lightning Thief and will begin our personal narratives. Students need to read chapters 13 and 14 by Tuesday, Oct. 10. |
