We are moving towards more independence with the Lightning Thief. At this point, the majority of the reading will now be done at home, and students will have Tuesdays and Thursday for discussion and project work-time.
Wednesday and Friday are focused on continuing to work on our personal narratives. Students are selecting their topics and learning the art of elaboration. We'll work on zooming in and slowing down important moments in our life.

We are celebrating Space Week this week! Students get to work with grade 3 students to create Lunar Launchers! On Friday, grade 7 students will get to watch Hidden Figures.
In Language Arts, we are continuing to read Lightning Thief and will begin our personal narratives. Students need to read chapters 13 and 14 by Tuesday, Oct. 10. Hello!
Progress reports were sent home with students today, along with information regarding the 7th grade's first social. Please sign the progress report and permission slip and return both to Ms. Apgar ASAP. Students will continue to be assigned chapters of Lightning Thief to read at home. I have some books available to take home, but students must remember to pick them up before leaving. I have also emailed them various e-text versions of the text https://www.readanybook.com/online/67152. Most days there is a reading check quiz following the homework reading. Thank you for your support! Hello, The district has announced that tonight's Open House is POSTPONED! This week, we are continuing to read the Lightning Thief. We will read chapter 6 in class on Tuesday, and chapter 7 will be homework. Students can borrow a copy from school or use the e-text (this was sent to student's NHPS gmail accounts and is in the post below). Quizzes follow most at home reading! In order to complete the novel, you will need to do some reading at home.
http://engageausl.businesscatalyst.com/assets/pj-and-the-lightning-thief.pdf The above link will get you to an e-text of the novel for at home reading. For Friday, you will need to read Chapter 5 and complete the worksheet given in class. At this point, all students have an independent reading book, which you should see coming home. Students have been given a blue folder to keep their books and reading logs in. Homework for tonight: Continue reading their independent reading book, fill out the reading log, and pick 2 Character response questions to answer (there are 9 options, but students only need to pick 2). I will collect these on Wednesday.
There is no school on Tuesday. When we return to school on Wednesday, students will return to our CORE text, The Lightning Thief. We'll work on chapters 3-5, focusing on close reading for details to infer character traits, and explore the use of foreshadowing in the text. Hello everyone!
Welcome to week 2 of the 7th grade! Thank you for providing your email addresses through my parent survey. (If you haven't please send me a message through the website or email me directly at [email protected]). I will send emails when we start new projects, etc. to help keep you in the loop. The expectation is that 7th graders bring their planners to each class so they can record their assignments. I will also post this information to my school weebly website: http://msapgarlanguagearts.weebly.com. I will begin updating PowerSchools with grades this week. We spent last week doing a variety of freewriting and getting to know you activities, while also previewing future independent reading books. Students in 7A have already had a chance to take some books home. Students in 7B and 7C will get books on Thursday. Reading log activities will start later this month, but I encourage each student to read nightly, even if there is no written work assigned! Book reports will be assigned later in the marking period. I will email the directions, once it is assigned. Today, we started The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan, which is our CORE novel for quarter one. Most of the reading for this book will be done in class, although there will be some chapters assigned for homework. We will also start brainstorming and prewriting for our personal narratives, which will be our first piece of major piece of writing. This will be one of several assignments that will go into each student’s portfolio binder. If students have not brought in a 1 or 1.5 inch binder, please have them do so by Friday. Most of the personal narrative writing will be done in class. Again, I will post updates on our progress to my school webpage, and if you have any questions, please feel free to email me. Tonight students were assigned a letter to write to me. They have until Friday to complete it. Starting next week, homework will be assigned nightly. If they prefer to type their work, that is always acceptable. I am willing to accept assignments through Google Docs if printing at home is unavailable, but the assignment must be shared with me BY 9am on the day the assignment is due! Please be sure to send in all paperwork from orientation! This paperwork was sent home with students who did not attend the orientation last week. The paperwork includes emergency contact cards, lunch information, school health clinic paperwork, etc. A few dates to remember: September 12: No School September 18: Students are dismissed at 1:30pm September 19: Open House/ Meet the Teacher Night September 21: No School I look forward to a productive school year! Please reach out with any questions! *Ms. Apgar I hope everyone has had a happy and healthy summer! Orientation sessions have happened this week, and our building is busy getting ready to see everyone on Monday!!
Students will report to the cafeteria on Monday morning! See you then!! Hello!
As we wrap up the last day of school, I want to wish you all a happy summer. It has been a pleasure teaching your child this year! We've made a lot of growth this year in SRI Scores, Smarter Balance test scores, in the quality of written essays, etc. Report cards are being mailed home this week, and in them are several different resources and notices. You will find information regarding the New Haven Free Public Library's Summer Learning Program. Each student had the opportunity to take home two free books last week. While many students are off to summer camps, summer jobs, and summer trips these next few months, please take a moment to have your child sign up via their website. Students will set their reading goals, and have the opportunity to each a free book and t-shirt. Your child can register by going to .http://nhfpl.org/ymsummerlearning. You will also find your child's most recent Scholastic Reading Inventory score. 80% of the 7th graders met or exceeded their growth goals, and continuing summer reading will help them maintain their current scores! By the end of 7th grade, students should fall between a 970-1170. Continuing to read over this summer is a great way to continue building vocabulary! There is also a notice regarding the 8th grade trip to E.P.C.O.T/ Disney World. A payment plan begins in September. Students were given a "Sponsor Sheet" last week, but I have attached another copy as well. Summer is a great time to start fundraising! If you are seeing out-of-state friends and family, consider having your child ask for sponsor help. In the past, students have paid for most of their trip by bring sponsor sheets to Summer Family Reuinions and other events. The letter outlines other fundraising ideas. For example, returning cans and bottles for the 5 cent redemption has raised over $250 to put towards the trip. Consider starting a collection at home. Thank you again for all your support this year! Wishing you a happy summer, *Ms. Apgar As we approach the end of the year, I want to take the time to say THANK YOU for all your support!
The 7th graders have made tremendous growth, with over 80% of students meeting or exceeding their reading growth goals. As we enter the summer, it is important that students continue to read over the summer, to maintain their growth. They recieved information regarding summer reading at the New Have Free Public Library summer reading programs, and had the opprotunity to pick books from the donation piles. Please encourage your child to read 30 minutes a day, and to sign up for the summer reading program: http://nhfpl.org/ymsummerlearning/ |
